What is a Black Diamond?

Black diamonds are sometimes referred to as carbonados. Their dark appearance can result from numerous dark inclusions or from treatment. Black diamonds are considered fancy-color diamonds and are evaluated differently from colorless diamonds.

Many black diamonds on the market have been treated with heat or irradiation to alter their color, although naturally black diamonds also exist and can be highly distinctive.

How do Black Diamonds get their color?

Natural black diamonds can contain a high concentration of dark inclusions that give them an opaque or metallic appearance. Some may be partly translucent and show a salt-and-pepper effect, while certain stones may display dark green or brown tones near the edges.
